Louise Amelia was the eldest of five children born to Karl, Grand Duke of Baden by his wife Stéphanie de Beauharnais (adopted daughter of Napoleon Bonaparte). Her paternal grandparents were Charles Louis, Hereditary Prince of Baden and Landgravine Amalie of Hesse-Darmstadt.
