About the GFS Ensemble System. The GFS Ensemble System (GEFS) consists of 20 statistically independent perturbations plus one control member which are run 4 times per day (initialized at 00, 06, 12, and 18 UTC).
Many of these are derived from another dynamical model's projection on the storm (such as NCEP's Global Forecasting System (GFS) model). The SHIPS diagnostic message is a human-readable text file which includes a summary of many of these predictors.
