What is cloud computing? Cloud computing is the use of comprehensive digital capabilities delivered via the internet for organizations to operate, innovate, and serve customers. It eliminates the need for organizations to host digital applications on their own servers.
Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.
The model consists of three main layers (see Figure 1-1), laid out in a top-down fashion: global essential characteristics that apply to all clouds, the service models by which cloud services are delivered, and how the services are instantiated in the form of deployment models.
Cloud computing is a type of computing where resources, such as applications and data, are stored on remote servers and accessed over the Internet. Instead of having a program installed on your computer, you can access or keep programs on a remote server.
Cloud computing is a distributed computing paradigm that focuses on providing a wide range of users with distributed access to scalable, virtualized hardware and/or software infrastructure over the internet.
The objective of this chapter is to introduce the fundamentals of cloud computing. This covers the features of cloud computing, the architecture of cloud computing, and different service classes and deployment models of cloud computing.
