The western cottonmouth (A. p. leucostoma) was synonymized with the eastern cottonmouth (A. p. piscivorus) into one species (with the oldest published name, A. p. piscivorus, having priority). The Florida cottonmouth ( A. p. conanti ) is now recognized as a separate species.

11 lis 2024 · The water moccasin is formally divided into three subspecies: the northern, or eastern, cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus piscivorus), the western cottonmouth (A. piscivorus leucostoma), and the Florida cottonmouth (A. piscivorus conanti).
Habitat/Range Cottonmouths are limited to the Jackson Purchase and parts of the Western Coalfields. They inhabit swamps, wetlands, lakes and floodplains during the warmer months.
Western cottonmouths prefer lowland swamps, lakes, rivers, sloughs, irrigation ditches, rice fields and salt marshes, but are not confined to living in moist habitats. When swimming, the cottonmouth holds its head above water with most of its body barely touching the surface. Cottonmouths are nocturnal, most active at night.
The Western Cottonmouth is the smallest of the three subspecies of Cottonmouth. It is similar to the Eastern Cottonmouth, A. p. piscivorus and the Florida Cottonmouth, A. p. conanti, except that they tend to become darker at a younger age.
