The Volta River (Akan: Asuo Firaw, Ewe: Amuga) is the main river system in the West African country of Ghana. It flows south into Ghana from the Bobo-Dioulasso highlands of Burkina Faso. The main parts of the river are the Black Volta, the White Volta, and the Red Volta.

It is the ninth largest river basin in sub-Saharan Africa. About 85% of the Volta basin is located in Burkina Faso and Ghana while Togo, Benin, Cote d'Ivoire and Mali share the remaining 15%. The basin is divided into four major sub-basins: the Black Volta, the White Volta, the Oti and the Lower Volta.
The Black Volta River Basin (BVRB) is one of the flood-prone sub-basins in the West African sub-region experiencing frequent and severe flood-related disasters in recent times.
