Florida SouthWestern State College (FSW) is a public college in Fort Myers, Florida. It is a member of the Florida College System. History. FSW was established in 1962 as Edison Junior College, named after Thomas Edison, who spent winter months in Fort Myers. Its first campus opened in 1965.
Edison State College was established in 1962 in Fort Myers, Florida, winter home to such luminaries as Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh, Harvey Firestone, and the College’s namesake, Thomas Edison. The first classes were held in a former elementary school and drew 500 students.
Edison State College celebrates its 51st year of providing higher education opportunities to the five counties it serves. It has enjoyed five decades of leadership and public service in Southwest Florida and the satisfaction of supporting the accomplishments of 35,000 graduates.

Lee County Campus, renamed the Thomas Edison Campus in 2014, has 24 permanent structures, including the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall.
Edison State collaborated with the Edison & Ford Estates to bring the Thomas Edison Black Maria Film Festival to Fort Myers for the first time since the festival began touring nationally in 1981.
