The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, or the AME Zion Church (AMEZ) is a historically African-American Christian denomination based in the United States. It was officially formed in 1821 in New York City, but operated for a number of years before then.
The AME Zion Church encompasses all of the United States, Canada, Caribbean Islands, England, Africa, India, and South America, and is under the supervision of 12 elected Bishops. The New York Conference, of which we are a part, is a part of the North Eastern Episcopal Area.
It developed from a congregation formed by a group of free Blacks who in 1796 left the John Street Methodist Church in New York City because of discrimination. They built their first church (Zion) in 1800 and were served for many years by white ministers of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
