"At" is rather more than a point; it could, for instance, refer to a building (provided you weren't referring specifically to the inside of it, although the inside is not necessarily excluded).

The area of that apartment is 2000 square feet. That is a ten-foot pole. The pole is ten feet long. In general, if used as an adjective, units are singular.

If I had to figure it out, I'd probably say that in is the area surrounded by the buildings, where you can meet people etc. while on can be used for the buildings or houses surrounding the square. Am I right?

I would say that these buildings are "on" the square. Some towns are built around a square with the town hall or courthouse built "in" the square. If there is a park with a fountain, then the fountain is "in" the square.
