From 1 September 2023, you're eligible for the shingles vaccine when you turn 65. You'll be offered 2 doses of the vaccine. These are given between 6 and 12 months apart. Your GP should contact you to make an appointment to have your shingles vaccine.
The shingles vaccine, also called the herpes zoster vaccine, helps reduce the risk of developing shingles and lowers the likelihood of complications if shingles does occur. Some EU Member States recommend the use of zoster vaccines for certain population groups based on age or medical condition.
Shingrix is a vaccine used in adults aged 50 years and over to protect against shingles (herpes zoster) and post-herpetic neuralgia (long-lasting nerve pain following shingles). It can also be used from the age of 18 years and over in adults who are at increased risk of herpes zoster.
