In the United States, capital punishment (also known as the death penalty) is a legal penalty in 27 states, throughout the country at the federal level, and in American Samoa. [ b ][ 1 ] It is also a legal penalty for some military offenses.
The sentence ordering that an offender be punished in such a manner is known as a death sentence, and the act of carrying out the sentence is known as an execution. A prisoner who has been sentenced to death and awaits execution is condemned and is commonly referred to as being "on death row ".
Death sentences. Amnesty International recorded at least 2,428 death sentences in 52 countries in 2023, a slight decrease from the total of 2,016 reported in 2022. At least 27,687 people were known to be under sentence of death globally at the end of 2023.
Death sentences were recorded in 16 countries in 2022, compared to 19 in 2021. Sierra Leone and the Central African Republic abolished the death penalty for all crimes, while Equatorial Guinea and Zambia abolished the death penalty for ordinary crimes only.
