I use Schottky diodes only on twins, including S400s, or on planes with long cabling to the motor if I can't shorten it. The diode definitely does not replace the capacitors. It has a different basic purpose.
Since your motor is trying its best to get rid of current during the off-cycle, and we don’t want it to go back to the ESC, you install a Schottky diode that will keep the current contained in the motor. By wiring a diode across the motor, we can return the energy back into the motor, instead of the ESC.
The diode is to provide a safe path for the inductive kickback of the motor. If you try to switch off the current in an inductor suddenly, it will make whatever voltage is necessary to keep the current flowing in the short term.
6 gru 2004 · A Schottky keeps "all" the current flowing in the right direction. A good way to see it's effects is to run your motor (without a prop, naturally) and touch the diode to the motor ears. Be sure you have the silver bands on the positive side. You'll hear an increase in rpms.
