Scarlatti’s sonatas are rightly associated with the rhythms and harmonies of Spanish folk music, which is hardly surprising given the time he spent in Lisbon, Seville and Madrid.
Scarlatti was already an accomplished harpsichordist: there is a famous story of a trial of skill with Handel at the palace of Cardinal Ottoboni in Rome, where Scarlatti was judged superior to Handel on the harpsichord (even though inferior on the organ).
