Musical symbols are marks and symbols in musical notation that indicate various aspects of how a piece of music is to be performed.
Musical symbols are marks and symbols used since about the 13th century in musical notation of musical scores. Some are used to notate pitch, tempo, metre, duration and articulation of a note or a passage of music.
The turn, also known as the gruppetto, appears as a sideways S above the staff. The “turn”, based on its orientation signifies playing the the note above or below the “primary” note, the primary note itself, the note above or below the turn note, and then the primary note itself again.
For example, in the place of 'sa', any one of 'sa', 'si', 'su' or 'se' is used. Similarly, in place of ri, any one of 'ra', 'ri', 'ru' or 're' is used. Horizontal lines divide the notation into 7 sections. Each section contains 4 to 7 lines of notation, with a title indicating its musical 'mode'.
