The Rockwell scale is a hardness scale based on indentation hardness of a material. The Rockwell test measures the depth of penetration of an indenter under a large load (major load) compared to the penetration made by a preload (minor load). [1] There are different scales, denoted by a single letter, that use different loads or indenters.
This table shows approximate hardness of steel using Brinell, Rockwell B and C and Vickers scales. These conversion charts are provided for guidance only as each scales uses different methods of measuring hardness. The right hand column show an approximate equivalent tensile strength.
Modern steels of powder metallurgy rank highest on the Rockwell scale and boast hardness around 64 and 68 HRC. These steels are rare (and hence, more expensive) and harder to process, but, when used correctly, they ensure unbelievable and long-lasting sharpness.

28 mar 2024 · The Rockwell hardness test is appropriate for hardness values ranging from 20-70HRC. If the hardness of the sample is less than 20HRC, it is recommended to use the HRB scale as the sensitivity of the indenter decreases with increased pressure on the conical part.
