25 lut 2024 · Purple Martins migrate in flocks, sometimes numbering in the thousands of birds at major stopovers. The oldest known wild Purple Martin was at least 13 years 8 months old, giving a minimum lifetime migration distance of over 200,000 miles.

Martins that breed in Eastern North America migrate across the Gulf of Mexico. Those that breed in Western North America most likely migrate across Mexico and Central America.
The earlier return of older individuals is a common occurrence in species of migratory birds. The Purple Martin not only gets all its food in flight, it gets all its water that way too. It skims the surface of a pond and scoops up the water with its lower bill.
Being migratory, their breeding range extends from central Alberta down through the eastern United States. Subspecies breed in Baja California, Arizona, and New Mexico.
Long-distance migrant. Most Purple Martins that breed in eastern North America probably migrate across the Gulf of Mexico. They form huge roosts (of several hundred thousand birds) in late summer along the Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida. Others may fly over Mexico and through Central America.
