Six out of 10 (61%) of all unintended pregnancies, and 3 out of 10 (29%) of all pregnancies, end in induced abortion (1). Comprehensive abortion care is included in the list of essential health care services published by WHO in 2020.
Main outcomes were the estimated rates of unintended pregnancy and abortion for 150 countries and territories, reported for the 5-year period 2015–2019, as annual averages per 1000 women aged 15–49 years.

We also compare groups of countries where abortion is broadly legal to countries where it is not.
