If you need to be induced it may affect where you can give birth. You may need to stay in hospital for longer and have more examinations. Induced labour is usually more painful than labour that starts on its own. Your pain relief options during labour are not restricted by being induced.
Your practitioner may determine it’s time to induce, or start, labor contractions using medications or other methods if a pregnancy is postterm (that is, you’ve reached 42 weeks) or your health or your baby’s is at risk.
Inductions are offered for various reasons, which include: longer pregnancy. pre-labour rupture of membranes (PROM) after 37 weeks. a baby that's expected to be larger. health complications for the mother or baby. when the baby has died. when the baby is unable or unlikely to survive outside the womb.
Evidence on the effects of induction of labour at or beyond 37 weeks’ gestation is from a Cochrane systematic review updated in 2020 (6). Since the 2018 review publication on which the last guideline recommendation was based, this updated review included four new studies, adding evidence from nearly 9000 more women and babies.

The average pregnancy lasts 40 weeks from the start of the woman's last menstrual period. Pregnancies continuing beyond 42 weeks are described as 'post-term' or 'postdate' and a woman and her clinician may decide to bring the birth on by induction.
