The cast-in ID consists of a letter or number, usually found in the depression just behind the thermostat's front right water passage and the #8 cylinder's runner. It is a 6 to 8 digit number, usually on one of the intake runners, often behind the carb, and usually near a raised CFD and star (dot with radiating lines).

16 lis 2021 · The letter at the end of the casting number indicates which big-block engine it is. An “A” casting is the 1965 425-ci engine, a “D” casting is the later 425-ci engine, a “G” casting is the long-stroke 400-ci engine, and an “F” casting is the 455 engine.
OLDSMOBILE BLOCK CASTING NUMBERS. Blocks 1949 - 1964 The casting number is located at the rear of the bell housing. The number are about ¾" high, and oriented to the right (passenger) side.

You can get a quick estimate of the year of the engine by looking at the 1" high casting letter on the lower-left corner of the block and/or head. If the engine is one of these high-performance motors, it's pretty easy to identify where it came from.
