On this site you can request records from every New York City agency by filing a Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request. But, some government information is already available online and you wouldn’t need to go through the FOIL process.
General information regarding FOIL can be obtained from the NYS Committee on Open Government and relevant sections of the Public Officers Law are provided at https://www.dos.ny.gov/coog/foil2.html. All FOIL requests should be submitted in writing: Submit a FOIL Request Application Online.
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST FOR. IMPORTANT – Please read. This FOIL request form is only for records maintained by the NYC Commission on Human Rights. It is not the correct form to use if you are seeking records maintained by a different City agency.
Request a Record. Please make your request specific so you receive the fastest service. After you submit a FOIL request you will receive a confirmation number so you can track the status of the response. The agency will notify you about how much time is required to respond to your request.
The Committee on Open Government is responsible for overseeing implementation of the Freedom of Information Law, and offers insight into what records are accessible, as well as provides answers to Frequently Asked Questions. To submit a FOIL request, use the Open FOIL NY online form.
If you cannot complete the online submission form, you may send your FOIL request by e-mail to foil@comptroller.nyc.gov or by mail to: Records Access Officer New York City Comptroller’s Office One Centre Street, Room 602 Municipal Building New York, NY 10007.
