25 kwi 2024 · The northern pine snake is a subspecies of the pine snake. It is a powerful, stout-bodied constrictor and one of the largest snakes of North America. It emerges from winter hibernation in late March or April and usually remains active till late October or November.
Northern pine snakes have a distinct head that mirrors the shape of a turtle's due to its small size relative to the snake's body, as well as its pointed snout. Unlike many North American snakes, it has four prefrontal scales, which could suggest a difference in its digging behavior.
This species is the most common watersnake in Wisconsin! Northern Watersnakes prefer slow-moving or standing water like ponds, lakes, vernal pools, marshes, and slow-moving rivers and streams.
