The National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association (APFA) with ten teams from four states, all of whom existed in some form as participants of regional leagues in their respective territories. The league took on its current name in 1922.
17 kwi 2024 · 1. Akron Pros. One of the NFL original teams, the Akron Pros were founded in 1920. They were from Ohio, and in 1920 they won the league’s first championship, defining a standard for success. 2. Canton Bulldogs. The Canton Bulldogs, another team from Ohio, had an important effect on the NFL in its early years.
The NFL realigned to create four divisions in each conference with four teams in each division. Arizona (NFC East) and Seattle (AFC West) joined the NFC West. NFC Central renamed NFC North.
Three NFL teams trace their histories to these rival leagues; the Los Angeles Rams who came from a 1936 iteration of the American Football League, and the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers, both from the AAFC.
The APFA started with 10 teams, which had already existed in some form as regional teams. Today, only two teams from this initial lineup are still around: the Arizona Cardinals (formerly the Chicago Cardinals) and the Chicago Bears (initially the Decatur Staleys).
To celebrate our 100th season, we are going back to our roots to honor the 13 Original Towns and 14 charter teams that started the NFL in September of 1920.
