14 kwi 2015 · The early development of jazz in New Orleans is most associated with the popularity of bandleader Charles "Buddy" Bolden, an "uptown" cornetist whose charisma and musical power became legendary. After playing briefly with Charley Galloway’s string band in 1894, Bolden formed his own group in 1895.
New Orleans jazz is unique, having evolved from the African and Caribbean call-and-response chants and drumming practiced by African Americans in the city during the post–Civil War era, and from the dance music played by brass bands that became popular in that city.
Modern jazz took hold in New Orleans in the 1950s when local musicians were exposed to trailblazers such as the great trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and when great players like him arrived in the city to perform. Most artists eager to explore the new music played their regular jobs and then got together to woodshed afterward.

The term "jazz" (early on often spelled "jass") did not become popular until the mid and late 1910s, when New Orleans musicians first rose to prominence in other parts of the US and the New Orleans style needed a new name to differentiate it from the nationally popular ragtime.
New Orleans musicians and musical styles continued to influence jazz nationally as the music went through a rapid series of stylistic changes. Jazz became the unchallenged popular music of America during the Swing era of the 1930s and 1940s.
