In the first significant design change since the 1920s, U.S. currency is redesigned to incorporate a series of new counterfeit deterrents. Issuance of the new banknotes begins with the $100 note in 1996, followed by the $50 note in 1997, the $20 note in 1998, and the $10 and $5 notes in 2000.
The redesigned $100 note introduces two advanced security features: the 3-D Security Ribbon and the Bell in the Inkwell. It also includes several highly effective features used in other U.S. denominations, such as the portrait watermark and security thread.
Meet the new $100 goes into circulation Tuesday. It still features the familiar portrait of Ben Franklin, but comes with a host of new security features.
The current denomination sequence and planned issuance dates have been in development with the Advanced Counterfeit Deterrence Committee since 2011: $10 (2026), $50 (2028), $20 (2030), $5 (2032) and $100 (2034). This sequence addresses risk mitigation and counterfeiting concerns.
