John Tayloe II (completed 1764) the home was built, first and foremost, as a stud horse farm importing and siring many of the finest horses of the day; including, Diomed, Sir Archy and Selima.

3 paź 2014 · With three-foot-thick walls of locally quarried dark brown sandstone and limestone quoin trim, Mount Airy is one of few stone houses built in Virginia during the 18th century and the first example of a neo-Palladian villa in the colonies—its aristocratic elegance fitting for one of the wealthiest Virginians of his time.
The oldest surviving Orangery in North America is also here at Mount Airy. An architectural masterpiece, the home owns a commanding view of the Rappahannock River valley perched upon a small hill looking westward towards the town of Tappahannock, founded itself in 1608 by Captain John Smith.
