And of course, you'll need two different Microsoft Accounts with one purchase of Minecraft each. On the steps you mentioned, I believe you tried to do it with the same Microsoft/Xbox account, right?

I apologize but you can only sign in on one device at a time which means that even if you own Minecraft and you have it on Xbox Game Pass it's still under one account. This means that your friend needs to buy the game or purchase an Xbox Game Pass under her/his account. Also, Xbox Game Pass can't be shared on another Microsoft account.
