  1. In this issue of JAMA Dermatology, Patel and colleagues 1 examine mortality after a diagnosis of melanoma in situ. Melanoma in situ is the earliest stage of melanoma (stage 0) and is localized to the outermost layer of skin (epidermis).

  2. In the present study, we demonstrated that patients who even develop a second primary melanoma (in situ or invasive) also had a relative survival greater than 100% at 15 years after receiving their initial diagnosis of MIS.

  3. As melanoma in situ has no associated mortality, early detection of melanoma in an in-situ phase increases survival from melanoma and leads to less morbidity and decreased costs compared to that associated with more advanced melanoma [1]. Management of melanoma is evolving.

  4. Findings. The survival analyses included 7963 cases and 39,662 comparators. Median age at MIS diagnosis were 63 (IQR 50–75) and 67 (IQR 57–76) years in women and men respectively. Median follow-up time was 120 months (IQR 102–152 months).

  5. 7 sie 2023 · There are five stages of melanoma. The first stage is called stage 0, or melanoma in situ. The last stage is called stage 4. Survival rates decrease with later stages of melanoma.

  6. Stage 0 melanoma, or melanoma in situ, is highly curable and has very little risk for recurrence or metastasis. The 5-year survival rate for local melanoma is 98.4%. Learn more about melanoma staging, treatment, and follow-up care.

  7. Stage 0 melanoma (melanoma in situ) has not grown deeper than the top layer of the skin (the epidermis). It is usually treated by surgery (wide excision) to remove the melanoma and a small margin of normal skin around it. The removed sample is then sent to a lab to be looked at with a microscope.
