A good high volume propylene (what all "MAP" torches use nowadays) is almost as hot without the handling concerns of acetylene. For higher temperature tasks like brazing, I just go straight for oxy-acetylene or, for really tiny brazing work, my cheap but effective oxy-propylene pinpoint torch.
