11 lip 2024 · In music, a key is the main group of pitches, or notes, that form the harmonic foundation of a piece of music. The main pitches used in a song are usually all from one particular scale, and this is where we name the song’s key.
Major keys are based on a major scale, and minor keys are based on a natural minor scale. For example, the key of C major consists of the notes from the C major scale, and the key of A minor consists of the notes from the A natural minor scale.
The key may be in the major or minor mode, though musicians assume major when this is not specified; for example "This piece is in C" implies that the key of the piece is C major. Popular songs and classical music from the common practice period are usually in one key.
