Founded in 1813, the Supreme Court of Louisiana has fashioned law and practice as it made a regime quite distinct from those in other states and yet very much a part of the federal system that is the American legal order.

There are also five courts of appeal, 43 district courts, five family or juvenile courts, 48 city courts and three parish courts.
