Napoleon II (Napoléon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte; 20 March 1811 – 22 July 1832) was the disputed Emperor of the French for a few weeks in 1815. He was the son of Emperor Napoleon I and Empress Marie Louise, daughter of Emperor Francis I of Austria. Napoleon II had been Prince Imperial of France and King of Rome since birth.
Ruled by Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte (Napoleon III), the period was one of significant achievements in infrastructure and economy, while France reasserted itself as the dominant power in Europe.

Napoleon III (Charles-Louis Napoléon Bonaparte; 20 April 1808 – 9 January 1873) was the first president of France from 1848 to 1852, and the last monarch of France as the second Emperor of the French from 1852 until he was deposed on 4 September 1870.
When Louis XVIII of France died in 1824, he was succeeded in by his younger brother, Charles, against the claims of Napoleon II (Franz), although his supporters vigorously championed his cause. Some supporting of Italian unification also championed his cause, calling for his recognition as king of a united Italy.
When the frail young man, heir to the Imperial throne, died on 22 July 1832, his cousin Louis-Napoleon became the guardian of the Empire’s legacy. From this moment, Louis-Napoleon, still in exile, tried to gather the Bonapartists around him.
