The 1922 team defeated John Tarleton to become junior college champions of Texas. Dropped at the onset of World War II, football was reinstated at Lon Morris College in 2009. Its final directory shows that L.M.C. offered men’s and women’s basketball and soccer, volleyball, softball, football, cross country/track, and baseball.
The Texas Historical Commission recognized Lon Morris College as the oldest junior college in Texas in 1972 and approved a marker for the campus. Lon Morris is also the only one of the pre-Civil War schools in East Texas still in existence.

Marker Text: Oldest junior college in Texas. Founded in Kilgore by Dr. Isaac Alexander, pioneer educator. In 1875 it became property of the East Texas (now the Texas) Conference of the Methodist Church. It was moved to Jacksonville in 1894.
