John Dewey’s writings on schooling are extensive, and characteristically wide-ranging: teachers are expected to think deeply about knowledge construction, how we think and learn, the purpose of curriculum in the life of the child, and the role of school and societal reform.
The man behind the words is the American philosopher, educator and social critic John Dewey, who all the way back in 1887 wrote his first pedagogical article My Pedagogic Creed, and whose pedagogical thoughts have since been known worldwide.
Dewey (1938) described progressive education as “a product of discontent with traditional education” which imposes adult standards, subject matter, and methodologies (no page number). He believed that traditional education as just described, was beyond the scope of young learners.
