Haenyeo[a] (Korean: 해녀; lit. sea women) are female divers in the South Korean province of Jeju, whose livelihood consists of harvesting a variety of mollusks, seaweed, and other sea life from the ocean. These are women that dive without any breathing equipment to harvest shellfish and other seafood along the coast of the island. Experienced haenyeo can dive up to 30 feet deep (9.1 meters) and they often spend hours at a time in the water.
