Maiden masks, representations of adolescent females, impersonate Igbo ideals of youthful feminine beauty. In their original context, they were danced by male performers during festivals honoring important patron deities, as well as for entertainment.
The best known among them are the so-called Maiden Spirit masks (Agbogho mmwo) which are danced by men at agricultural festivals and funerals of prominent members of the village. Topped by elaborate coiffures, these masks are said to represent the beauty and purity of deceased maidens.
Masks used offer a visual appeal for their shapes and forms. In these visible masquerades, performances of harassment , music, dance, and parodies are acted out (Oyeneke 25). The invisible masquerades take place at night.
Some masks appear at only one festival, but the majority appear at many or all. Best known are those of the Northern Igbo Mmo society, which represents the spirits of deceased maidens and their mothers with masks symbolizing beauty.
