When you start bringing in pupils and they start leveling up, you will in turn gain experience points. This is the link that will appear on the home page of your brute. Post it on FB and mybrute forums to get more pupils in less time. The more experience points you get, the more skills you get.
Your Brute is more likely to be matched with a peer leveled Brute than one who is twenty levels above or below their own, but as the pool of available participants shrinks with each round of eliminations the chance of running into an uneven match will increase.

So you want to fire farm. It's not necessary, who cares, some of us like efficiency, moving on. The first rule of efficient farming is you do it with a /fire brute. "But my TW/Bio is capped to fire defense and does tons of DPS!" Your TW/Bio lacks /fires damage auras.
Miracle +Recovery into your first Health slot. Panacea +HP/End into your next available slot of a passive power that accepts healing enhancements. Example: Health or Fast Healing.
I'd say aim first to have at least three slots in every armor and attack power you use regularly. Things like Fitness and travel powers can wait, focus on your two main sets. If you got extra slots, 4-slot your toggles and armors first. Even for a Brute, survivability is key.
