CSO is the oldest and most well-tested compressed ISO format for PSP, and it's compatible with various custom firmwares for the real PSP, so the files are playable from a memory stick on hardware.
PPSSPP supports iso, cso(including v2) and pbp containers for disc images(can also load extracted folders). It has access to way more power than real PSP and there's no difference between containers formats outside of file size(pbp files have best compression/smallest files).
