Petersburg, West Virginia (WV), the county seat of Grant County, was settled in 1745 by German colonists but was not incorporated until 1920. It was named for Jacob Peterson, who owned of the first general store in the area.
Today, it is one of the best preserved Civil War forts remaining in West Virginia and features an interpretive trail. The city experienced significant growth spurts during the early 1900s and again from 1980 to 2010, when it reached its peak of 2,467.
In September 1858, the 700-ton Southern Star entered the Petersburg harbor. It was the largest steamboat to dock at the port of Petersburg. Many African-Americans worked in the mills lining the Appomattox River and as boatmen on the vessels transporting goods from and to Petersburg.
