14 maj 2021 · These turtles can be found along the Gulf of Mexico, from Louisiana to Florida. They can be found near water bodies and in swamps & marshes. If you wish to acquire a specimen, a captive-bred is always the way to go as this doesn’t negatively impact the wild populations.

They have a large, domed upper shell that’s typically dark brown or black with yellow stripes or blotches. They’re not aquatic turtles, but they do love to be around water.

• The Gulf Coast box turtle (Terrapene c. major) is the largest of the group with an upper shell that flares outward at the end. This subspecies ranges from the Florida panhandle into eastern Texas. • The Florida box turtle (Terrapene c. bauri) is found throughout Florida down into the Florida keys.
Box turtles are a smaller sized animal, with the largest species, the Gulf Coast box turtle, maxing out at about 8 inches of shell length. Males tend to be slightly larger than females. The box turtle is known to be the only family of turtles able to completely enclose themselves within their shell.
How To Care For A Box Turtle. Most are found in relatively warm environments (e.g. Vietnam, Laos, and China). They like forested areas with lots of shade and some patches of light. In forests they are commonly found amongst wet leaves, logs and stumps around the edge of ponds.
Box Turtles are one of the most common reptile pets in the United States. With proper care, they are long-lived, with life spans of 30 to 40 years and perhaps much longer.
