6 sty 2020 · On a chilly day, mid-winter, you notice a large nest made of sticks high in a leafless cottonwood. Atop the nest sits a large, dark shape, its broad head sporting two ear-like tufts, suggesting a cat’s ears. A female Great Horned Owl is incubating two eggs.
May begin nesting very early in north (late winter), possibly so that young will have time to learn hunting skills before next winter begins. In courtship, male performs display flight, also feeds female.

Females can incubate eggs in temperatures as low as -35°F (-37°C), and eggs have been known to survive at -25°F (-31°C) for up to 20 minutes while the female takes a break from incubation duties!
Most tree nests used by great horned owls are constructed by other animals, often from a height of about 4.5 to 22 m (15 to 72 ft) off the ground. They often take over a nest used by some other large bird, sometimes adding feathers to line the nest but usually not much more.

Distribution and Habitat. The Great Horned Owl has the widest distri-bution, utilizes the largest variety of food sourc-es, and has the largest diversity of nesting sites of any owl in America. They are equally at home in deserts, grasslands, forested regions, and urban settings.
