12 wrz 2022 · Gonococcal conjunctivitis (GC), also known as gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum in newborns, is an eye infection caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhea. This condition occurs when the eyes come into contact with infected genital secretions.
17 lip 2023 · Neonatal conjunctivitis, also called ophthalmia neonatorum, typically presents during the first four weeks of life. The infection is usually acquired during delivery and is the most common ocular disease in neonates. Typical symptoms are persistent tearing and a mucoid discharge in the inner corner of the eye.
Gonococcal conjunctivitis usually develops in the first 5 days after birth and is rapidly progressive; presentation in the second week suggests postnatal exposure. Most affected neonates have profuse purulent conjunctivitis and oedema of the eyelid (Figure 1), but some may have only a mild inflammatory response.
Neonatal conjunctivitis is an ocular surface disease consisting of inflammation of the conjunctiva, blood vessel dilation, tearing, and purulent or non-purulent drainage within 30 days of age. Newborns are vulnerable to developing conjunctivitis due to reduced tear secretion and drainage, as well as decreased immune function.

21 wrz 2020 · Neonates born to gonorrhoea‐infected mothers have a 30% to 50% risk of developing gonococcal conjunctivitis . Untreated or inappropriately treated gonococcal conjunctivitis can result in corneal perforation and vision loss in 24 hours (Donham 2008; Duke‐Elder 1965).
Gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum can cause corneal scarring, ocular perforation, and blindness as early as 24 hours after birth. In the absence of ocular prophylaxis, transmission rates of gonococcal infection from mother to newborn are 30% to 50%.
