Gen 15:1. Observe here, I. The time when God made this treaty with Abram: After these things. 1. After that famous act of generous charity which Abram had done, in rescuing his friends and neighbours out of distress, and that, not for price nor reward. After this, God made him this gracious visit.
(F1) There were two elements in the divine promise to Abram: (1) the creation of the first Israel, including the promise of settling them in Canaan and making of them a mighty nation, and. (2) the bringing in, through them, of the Messiah, by means of whom redemption and salvation would be made available to all who live on earth.
Abram asked God to strengthen his faith. In response Yahweh promised to give the patriarch innumerable descendants. This led Abram to request some further assurance that God would indeed do what He promised. God graciously obliged him by formalizing the promises and making a covenant.
