The freshwater drum, Aplodinotus grunniens, is a fish endemic to North and Central America. It is the only species in the genus Aplodinotus, [3] and is a member of the family Sciaenidae. It is the only North American member of the group that inhabits freshwater for its entire life. [4]
The freshwater drum is a rounded fish with a small tail and a silvery cast to its scales. Its mouth is located toward bottom of its face. It's the only freshwater fish on which the lateral line, a sense organ used to detect motion in the water, runs right through tail.
Freshwater drum spawn in May and June in Minnesota, after water temperatures reach 19° C (about 66° F). They are pelagic spawners, which means they release their eggs into deep, open waters of lakes and large rivers.

22 lis 2019 · The freshwater drum is a fish known for its noise. Males make a grunting or rumbling sound during the breeding season, which is thought to attract females. That noisiness generated many colorful nicknames, including croaker, thunder pumper, grunter, grinder, bubbler.
Freshwater drums are long-lived and have attained maximum ages of 72 years old in Red Lakes, Minnesota and 32 years old in the Cahaba River, Alabama. Though they can reach very old age, the average age of a freshwater drum is between 6 and 13 years.
