The Davidic Covenant. Second Samuel 7:8–16 records a covenant established by God with David, wherein God made three major promises to David. First, God promised that David’s “house” (his physical line of descent) would endure forever (v. 16; cf. 2 Chr. 21:7; Ps. 89:3–4, 36).

This promise is contained in what is known as the Davidic Covenant. David wisely confided in Nathan the prophet, “I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains” (2 Sam. 7:2). Nathan instructed David, “Do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee” (v. 3).
Although God did not allow David to build the Temple, He did establish a significant covenant with him. Because God made this covenant with David, theologians have called it the Davidic Covenant. This covenant has special significance concerning the future Kingdom of God foretold in the Bible.
