Expanded polypropylene (EPP) is a recyclable particle foam that is already pre-foamed into foam beads by the raw material manufacturer. During the production of foam beads by the individual EPP manufacturers, we can distinguish between two different methods and therefore two grades of expanded polypropylene: autoclave and extruded EPP foam.
EPP – the values behind the material Demands are rising: Both the industry and the design sector expect a lot from an innovative material. In addition to outstanding weight-specific mechanical properties and a high degree of design freedom, new materials should also be environmentally friendly and safe.
EPP: Contaminant-free, reusable and sustainable. During the production of expanded polypropylene, no phthalates or other health-harming substances are added. Because of this, at the end of their life, EPP moulded parts can be shredded and made into new parts. The robustness of the material ensures that components made of EPP are very durable.
EPP as a raw material – light and stable. In addition to the cost effective production of EPP, the use of foams in a wide range of industries also helps to conserve resources. As a rule of thumb, less than 10 per cent of the material, which is required in the production of compact material, is needed to produce expanded polypropylene foam.
EPP and the waste hierarchy. The material EPP fully complies with the ideas behind recycling management and waste laws and the associated waste hierarchy. Reduce: as a foam, which mainly consists of air, EPP contributes to minimising the use of resources. Reuse: EPP products are durable and can be reused many times.
Use of EPP for furniture and design products. Thanks to the adaptability of EPP, the material offers plenty of room for innovative ideas. Expanded polypropylene can be produced in countless colour variations. The result: There are no limits to the design possibilities in the design and furniture industry.
