El Cajon Boulevard is a major east–west thoroughfare through San Diego, La Mesa and El Cajon, California. Before the creation of Interstate 8 it was the principal automobile route from San Diego to El Cajon, the Imperial Valley, and points east as U.S. Route 80; it is now signed as a business loop of Interstate 8.
The area doesn’t look particularly happening today, but 3465 El Cajon Blvd., aka the Rock Palace, was for a brief time during the mid 1980’s a key location for both the mod and punk scenes. The art deco building itself dates to 1928.* Today there’s a few shops at street level, with three large windows overlooking the area.
El Cajon Boulevard has a rich history. From its time as a wagon trail to today with a shared bike and bus rapid transit lane, The Boulevard has been a vital San Diego thoroughfare. We have been documenting this history and are continually updating the photos and stories that tell story.
