The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 27 member states that are party to the EU's founding treaties, and thereby subject to the privileges and obligations of membership. They have agreed by the treaties to share their own sovereignty through the institutions of the European Union in certain aspects of government.
EP becomes equal as lawmaker with the Council in several important areas: setting the EU budget, agriculture policy and justice and home affairs. Parliament has the right to appoint the President of the Commission, based on proposal from the Council, taking the results of EP elections into account.
Since then, the EU's membership has grown to twenty-seven, with the latest member state being Croatia, which joined in July 2013. The most recent territorial enlargement of the EU was the incorporation of Mayotte in 2014. Campione d'Italia joined the EU Customs Union in 2020.
