Road users who are impaired by alcohol have a significantly higher risk of being involved in a crash. Enacting and enforcing strong drink-driving laws and low blood alcohol concentration limits via sobriety checkpoints and random breath testing will help to turn the tide.
16 maj 2024 · In 2020, 11,654 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers, accounting for 30% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States. 1 This was a 14.3% increase compared to the number of crash deaths involving alcohol-impaired drivers in 2019. 1
Impairment due to alcohol and/or drugs is a major cause of motor vehicle crashes worldwide. Alcohol, illegal drugs and various prescribed drugs (medicines) impair driver's functional capabilities which leads to increased crash risk.
In 2022, 13,524 people were killed in alcohol-impaired crashes, a decrease of 0.7% after two consecutive years of increases. Alcohol-impaired driving crashes involve at least one driver or motorcycle operator with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 grams per deciliter (g/dL) or higher.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Alcohol Impaired Driving Safety Fact Sheet, 13,524 people died in alcohol-impaired crashes in 2022—a slight decrease of about 1 percent from 2021. Alcohol-impaired crash fatalities accounted for 32 percent of all crash fatalities.
