However, a drip rate is not a drug dosage, since different IV tubes deliver different volumes of drips that would contain different amounts of medication.

The drop factor tells you how many drops are in 1 mL of fluid, which you can use to help calculate the rate the IV should run. In the image below, you can see the size difference between a large drop of a macro set and a small drop of a micro set.

Look at the tubing label for the drop factor. Most tubing is 10, 15, 20. or 60 drops per ml (or gtt/ml). It takes that many visible drops into the drip chamber to equal 1 ml. If the tubing has a drop factor of 10 drops/ml, then it takes 10 drops to equal 1 ml.
