The post is best known for events other than military accomplishments: a 1944 soldier raid on Italian prisoner camp, a court martial with injustices corrected more than 60 years later, a 1970 Indian demonstration and occupation, and struggles to convert the fort into Discovery Park.
Discovery Park is home to a richness of history. There is no doubt that the park holds a particular fondness for Seattleites and international visitors alike. While Discovery Park is well-known for its Military History, much less is known about its indigenous, pre-settlement history.
The natural history of Discovery Park began during the Ice Ages. The last Ice Age 17,400 years ago brought a 3,000-foot-thick sheet of ice called the Puget Lobe or Cordilleran Ice Sheet across North America carving out much of the Seattle region before retreating and melting back to the north.
The original high hopes that the post in Magnolia would become a major military installation by Seattle's turn-of-the-century civic leaders were never realized. Fort Lawton was developed in the late 1890s, opened in the early 1900s, and had long periods of underuse after each world war.
