In diesel fuel, the density increases with the increase in the number of carbon atoms present in it. Thus, the increasing order of density begins with paraffins, naphthenes, and aromatics.
Important properties which are used to characterize diesel fuel include cetane number (or cetane index), fuel volatility, density, viscosity, low temperature operability properties, and sulfur content.
